Rhapis is a small genus with as many as twelve species said to occur in south east Asia and are found in southern China, Thailand, Laos and northern Sumatra (Indonesia).

They are clustering palms commonly known as Lady Palms, and they belong to the subfamily Coryphoideae, tribe Corypheae, subtribe Thrinacinae. It is characterized by slender stems, palmate leaves, divided regularly into many-folded segments with truncate or oblique apices; the divisions into segments unusually occurs between the folds, rather than along the folds, a situation known elsewhere only in Rhapidophyllum.

Only two are commonly available in Australia, they are Rhapis excelsa and Rhapis subtilis. The latter is usually sold in our Australian nurseries as Rhapis humilis but it is now clear that it is not that species.
