Palms   Dypsis eriostachys

Common Names: Silk Palm Conservation Status: Critically endangered due to habitat loss, and plant and seed collecting. It is estimated there are less than 50 individuals left in the wild. It is however, well established in cultivation. Distribution & Habitat: It is only found in forest on the isolated hill, Vatovavy, in the coastal plain of eastern Madagascar near Mananjary. It occurs on gentle slopes at an elevation of approximately 450 metres above sea level. Description: A attractive small to medium sized, attractive, clustering Dypsis with thin stems, to 1.5 metres tall, a thick reddish brown tomentum, and entire, deeply bifid, lightly corrugated leaves up to 40 cm long. Culture: Warm, sheltered and moist. Easily grown in sub-tropical/tropical areas.
