Distribution & Habitat:
Open forest in the Central Plateau of Madagascar.
Description:
"One of the most imposing palms of the island", Dr John Dransfield,
from "Palms of Madagascar". A single trunked or clustering palm
(usually a pair of trunks) to about 20m high, ventricose
(i.e. bulging in the center), slightly plumose leaves,
very attractive white crownshaft.
General:
Unfortunately, this palm is critically endangered in its habitat,
however it has become well established in cultivation,
due to its attractiveness.
Culture:
Full sun, well drained position. Frost, and drought tolerant.
Quite slow growing.
