Cycads   Zamia sp. 'Bocas Del Toro'

Conservation Status: Unknown Distribution & Habitat: Rainforest in the Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro, Panama. Description: A very attractive small cycad with bright green corrugated leaves, and a prickeld petiole. Very similar in appearance to Z. neurophyllidia . General: Bocas del Toro is spanish for "mouths of the bull". It is unknown exactly where this name came from, but local legend has it that Christopher Columbus gave the islands that name, after seeing numerous dark waterfalls pouring onto beaches. On the other hand, there are people that just say that the last "cacique" (chief) of the region was known as "Boka Toro". Culture: Warm, sheltered and moist but well drained.	Figure 1. Z. sp.
