Cycads   Encephalartos humilis

Conservation Status: Vulnerable Common Names: Dwarf cycad Distribution & Habitat: This species is found in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. with subpopulations being found in the catchment area of the Crocodile River, near Nelspruit, Waterval Boven and Lydenburg. It grows in subalpine grassland, on slopes on sandy soils over sandstones and is often wedged between sandstone rocks. It is usually found on east and northeast facing slopes. Description: This is a dwarf species with very little clear trunk and short, keeled, twisted, recurved, dark green, semiglossy leaves up to 50 cm (18 inches) long, with entire leaflets. Cultivation: Likes a sunny, well drained position. In habitat, heavy rains and dense mists increase coning, so that might be worth trying in cultivation.
