These potting mixes came from a couple of postings to the cycad list (cycad@onelist.com) in late August, 1999.
From Craig Nazor:
My basic mix is;
1 part pumice
1 part Peat moss
1 part fir bark
1 part sand
1 part black compost
I am in a Cactus and Succulent Society, and we order pumice by the pallet for members at a considerably reduced price. I get the largest size (silica) blasting sand from a sand blasting supply house -it's cheap, clean, and well screened for size.
If it is a more xeric species particularly susceptible to rot, I double the pumice and leave out the peat moss. I also add some (a handful or so) decomposed granite, some limestone, and some green sand.
The fir bark adds structure and decomposes over time. This helps provide a longer period between repottings.

Of those Cycads I've had experience with (which certainly isn't all of them), what I consider "xeric" for pot conditions in Texas are:
Dioon caputoi
Encephalartos lehmannii
E. trispinosus
Macrozamia macdonnellii
and probably some others. I'm still experimenting. As you probably know, we sometimes get a lot of rain, and sometimes not! I hate to move plants under cover because of rain, but I also hate to see cycads rot. Moving them in from the cold is bad enough! The soil mix seems to be the trick.
